How do you Define a Successful Career?
As we enter the business world, we strive for shorter hours, more money, and greater benefits to help us grow a family and enjoy our life outside of work. This never ending circle repeats itself with every generation. It’s not uncommon for people to be forced to leave from one career and enter another, while striving to rebuild what they thought was success. It’s with this in mind that we need to think about how to properly define a successful career.
The answer to that lies in the individual wants and goals of any person, and there’s not actual wrong answer. Here’s a few points of view that determine career success.
The Money Lover
To the person who loves their money, it isn’t about what your role is, or what company you work for, or even whether or not people like you. The ones that love money determine their career’s success simply based on how much they make in a year. Being able to afford the finer things in life that let them enjoy their time outside of work is what gives them the motivation to keep working hard. Starting from the bottom is usually the hardest for this type of person, and they work tirelessly to get raises and promotions. Each review or sit down they have with human resources or upper management is simply a discussion on how to make more money in their position.
The Power Lover
Nobody likes being at the bottom rung of any ladder, but at the same time, most people don’t mind being middle management. However several people are out there to find success when they find power. Being in control of how an operation or business works is what gives them pleasure at their place of work. Having to answer to someone above them is never fun, and they often insist that other people are wrong. A successful career to the power lover is attained when they answer to no one.
The Happy Worker
Often the most laid back of employees, these people define a successful career by how happy they are at their job. It’s not always about making more money or having better benefits, but enjoying the people that surround you and the environment you spend each waking day in. When you can enjoy going to work each morning, these people believe that they have attained a successful career.
